This Sunday's "Club Crocodile Family Fun Day" will feature a range of activities set to the sounds of local musicians. "Free of the Phonies" are in the afternoon line up and keen to play a range of music including popular covers and a selection of band originals.
Recently caught surveying the Airlie Beach foreshore venue for the event they spoke with ChannelWhitsunday.com. "Bookended" by a couple of fathers-come-managers the young band were enthusiastic about the opportunity.
"Local youth music has limited outlet" said Harry Kemp. "Being a band under the age of 18 you won't expect to see us performing at any of the local licensed premises and where else is there to perform?"
Made up of Michael Vlasic (Bass), Adam Rolf (Lead Guitar), James Spruce (Dummer) and the outspoken Harry (Guitar), the members have a range of musical interests, but have formed "Free of the Phonies" to unify their common musical interests.
One wonders about their reference to being "Beach Boys gone punk", but they do offer covers and inspiration from bands like "Living End", "Bouncing Souls", and "Wolf Mother". Amongst their original music they have been working hard on songs titled "Unnamed Anthem", "Crew Cut" and "Haze Filled Days". The band declined to be associated with powers of premonition given the recent dust storm, but perhaps we should be concerned if they start work on either of "Monsoon Madness" or "Cyclone Summer".
We will see this coming Sunday ...
