Fun in the sun extends to tropical wearable art. The Whitsundays region has a strong culture of creativity and well displayed through the annual "Wearable Art" competition. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach and beautifully organised by the Reef Festival's Pamela Pole, the 2009 Wearable Art parade attracted dozens of entries, variously created by youth of the Whitsundays.
Popular themes included beach wear with Whitsunday flavours, some even smelling of sweet pineapple punch. The most pointed however told the tale of the 2009 Victorian bush fire disaster and the regrowth after.
Pam Pole tireless efforts in organising the wearable art every year deserve the highest recognition.
