Despite the tourist town of Airlie Beach taking the brunt of recent severe category 4 Cyclone Debbie with many local businesses and sponsors being affected the Reef Festival committee has confirmed that the show must go on!
The committee has worked tirelessly since the cyclone to ensure Whitsundays favourite family-friendly festival goes ahead reinforcing the message that Airlie Beach is open for business and is well and truly ready to party!
The Whitsunday Reef Festival celebrates what it means to live in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef as Airlie Beach comes alive with thousands of people enjoying events all over town including its vibrant Main Street, and picturesque foreshore.
This year the festival will be compacted into a four-day entertainment extravaganza from August 3rd – 6th with beach parties, live music, main street car show and street parade, carnival rides, market stalls, fireworks and plenty of free, family-friendly activities.
“Even though we have lost a little time and local sponsorship may be more difficult this year as businesses recover we are confident that we will be able to put on a fantastic festival,” event organiser Margie Murphy said. “We have got a passionate committee and have already had some great support from suppliers and entertainers who have said they will provide their services for free this year in support of the regions recovery efforts”
Above Ground Zero Fireworks was the first to offer their support to the event pledging to put on their usual spectacular pyrotechnics display over the Coral Sea free of charge. After many years working in the region AGZF owner Craig Tatnell said he was happy to give back. “Airlie Beach has been great to us and we want to help the region get back on its feet and give the people something to celebrate” he said
